Founded in 1796, Kendal Museum is one of the oldest museums in the country. It's fascinating collections include local Archaeology, History, Geology and a Natural History collection from around the globe. Archaeology displays tell the story of man in Cumbria. On display are prehistoric material including Neolithic axe heads from Great Langdale, local Roman and Viking objects, Egyptian artefacts, coin hoards, and a display on Kendal Castle. The Lake District Natural History Gallery shows the geological history of the area with local fossils and minerals on display, and a nature trail discovers the flora and fauna of local habitats from a Kendal garden to the High Fells. The author and fellwalker, Alfred Wainwright, was Honorary Curator here from 1945-1974. Original pen and ink drawings from his 'Pictorial Guides', maps, hand-written accounts, his reconstructed office, and personal items are on display. The World Wildlife Gallery gives an introduction to the animals, insects and environment on each continent, and also highlights conservation issues. There is a display on Evolution and Ecology before each continent is explored in turn. The museum has a programme of temporary exhibitions and a wide range of lectures and special events. There are also lots of activities for children including holiday activities, free worksheets, quizzes, and interactive displays.
